Hydraulic Steel Structures

Screens, screen cleaning, gates, sluices and weir flaps.

What carries the water has to hold.

Fine screens keep debris away from the intake, gates control the flow, flaps hold water back and release it again: hydraulic steel structures are what makes a hydro-electric plant workable in the first place. We design, manufacture and install these components — and keep them in service for decades.

Because we run plants of our own, we plan from the point of view of the person who later has to operate them: a closing element must still move after standing still for a long time, and it must be serviceable without draining half the plant.

Screens and Screen Cleaning

Fine screens in stainless steel keep debris away from the intake. So that they keep doing so, we build the matching cleaning machine to go with them — from a compact raker through to a version with an excavator arm.

Bar spacing, inclination and reach follow the plant and the conditions on site, not a catalogue.

Gates, Sluices and Flaps

Intake and shut-off gates, bottom-outlet and flushing sluices, weir and flushing flaps: we manufacture the closing elements together with their drives, guides and seals.

Refurbishing existing installations is part of the work as well — right down to overhauling a roof weir and fitting it with a new timber deck.

What we build

  • Cross-flow screen cleaners — for intake channels, on our own steel structure, with fish-screen profile where required
  • Carousel and excavator-type screen cleaners — for wide intakes and great screen depths, with screenings discharged into the bypass channel
  • Fine screens, galvanised or stainless, in flat-round-flat design
  • Slide and roller gates, inlet, shut-off and flushing gates
  • Flap weir systems, weir and flushing flaps
  • Overhaul of listed historic hydraulic steel structures
  • Screenings disposal
